Easing Breast Pain Due to Feeding

Experts agree that breastfeeding is the best way to give your new baby the healthiest start possible. From the very beginning, breast milk offers your baby protection against illness and infection. Colostrum is the first type of milk expressed after your baby is born, and contains protective antibodies that you just cannot find in baby formula. Breastfed babies are shown to get sick less often, and have a lower risk of problems later in life. Even though feeding your baby this way has so many health benefits, some women experience breast pain due to feeding.

It's important to understand that discomfort is normal when first learning to breastfeed. During the first few days, new moms often find their breasts are sore and irritated. One reason for this discomfort is engorgement, which means the breasts are filled with milk. In addition, hormonal fluctuations can cause swelling and tenderness. After about a week, this discomfort should subside. When it comes to soreness of the nipples, the discomfort can be eased by learning proper positioning and using cold compresses. One home remedy for breast pain is to use cold cabbage leaves as a compress. This may sound strange, but many women swear by it.

The good news is that most pain due to breastfeeding does subside over time, and becomes less uncomfortable the more you feed your baby. If you find that the pain of feeding continues over time, you may need a little guidance. If your baby is latching on incorrectly, this can lead to cracked, sore nipples. Improper positioning is another common cause of breastfeeding pain. Sometimes, pain can be caused by mastitis, which is a clogged milk duct. If you suspect mastitis, be sure to tell your doctor.

On the subject of your doctor, it is important to maintain good communication regarding any issues going on with your body. These issues include any discomfort you experience related to breastfeeding. When you choose to breastfeed, you are choosing the healthiest way to nurture your new baby. All the health benefits of breastfeeding far outweigh the drawbacks for most new moms. There are a variety of resources to help you make feeding your baby less uncomfortable and more efficient. Your doctor can refer you to classes, consultants and/or groups to help you learn more about good breastfeeding techniques.
