Considerations for Birth Control Use While Breast Feeding

Many women who choose to breastfeed have questions about birth control use while breast feeding. One of the most important things to understand is that the act of breastfeeding actually serves as a form of birth control on its own. This is because breastfeeding suppresses ovulation. It may be necessary to use a secondary method of birth control, however, because breastfeeding as birth control is certainly not 100 percent effective. Condoms are a good backup method because they do not introduce any hormones into the mother's body.

Speaking of hormones, most doctors will recommend that you do not use birth control pills while breastfeeding, at least for the first six to eight weeks. One reason is because these pills can reduce your milk supply due to the hormones they contain. There are pills commonly called mini-pills that contain progestin only. While they are not as effective as traditional birth control pills they can work well if taken twice daily at the same time every day. Even though some of the progestin does reach the breastmilk, experts feel there are no discernable negative effects for your baby. A small amount of women do experience variations with the amount of milk they produce but rarely enough to stop taking the pill.

There are other forms of contraception you may want to consider using while breastfeeding. Barrier methods are the safest and can be quite effective. In addition to condoms, other barrier methods include the diaphragm, IUD, and vaginal sponge. You can also use spermicide creams, gels or film along with these methods of contraception for extra protection. The most effective yet permanent forms of contraception include tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men. Whether or not you choose a permanent contraception method such as this is a highly personal choice.

If you have questions or concerns about birth control use while breast feeding, speak to your doctor. He or she can direct you on the safest and most effective methods of contraception available. Before choosing a birth control method, make sure you understand all the risks and benefits offered. If you have questions, never be afraid to ask. Although contraception can be an awkward subject for many women, you should never be embarrassed or nervous about discussing it with your medical professional.
